The sporting heart of the World Police & Fire Games Rotterdam 2022 is Rotterdam Ahoy. This large-scale, modern complex is hosting more than 10 sports during the WPFG, including CrossFit, table tennis, and indoor soccer. Rotterdam Ahoy is also the Sports Host Area of the WPFG Rotterdam 2022: a place where all athletes and visitors can come together, sit back and relax.
Rotterdam’s foremost event location
Rotterdam Ahoy has a rich history, including its sporting history. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Rotterdam Ahoy. The official opening took place during the ‘Zesdaagse’ (Six-day event), a popular track-cycling event in the Netherlands that is still held every year. Rotterdam Ahoy was built with the emphasis on sports, but very quickly grew to become the Netherlands’ leading temple of pop music. The first concert was given by Pink Floyd: a legendary name for a legendary new stage. Pink Floyd was followed by many other big names, such as Queen, Fleetwood Mac and Coldplay.
Sports temple
However, Rotterdam Ahoy is equally suitable as a sports temple. For over 50 years, a variety of major sporting events have been organized in Rotterdam Ahoy, such as the Gymnastics World Championships, the European Volleyball Championships and the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships. There are also events that regularly return to Rotterdam. In 2021, the ATP 500 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament will be organized for the 48th time in Rotterdam Ahoy. Glory Kickboxing events are organized here and the Premier League Darts returns to Rotterdam on a regular basis. In 2022, it’s the turn of the competitors in the World Police & Fire Games to bring out the best in themselves in this legendary building.
During the World Police & Fire Games, sports are being organized in five halls at Rotterdam Ahoy. You can easily walk from one hall to the other, and so from one sport to another. So there’s nothing to stop you from cheering on all your colleagues! The sports venue enjoys excellent access by public transportation and by car. There are 2,000 parking spaces and the Athletes Village is only a 10-minute subway ride away!
