Wim de Rooij, CEO World Police & Fire Games Rotterdam 2021: “So there you are in Chengdu with the flag of the World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) in your hands. After 30 years of being involved in this wonderful event, a dream begins to come true. Why the dream?
“I have a dream”
Back in 2013, at our first bid presentation in Belfast, I opened my speech with “I have a dream”. My words did not have the same intention as those of Dr Martin Luther King, the well-known defender of equal civil rights. No, my dream was to bring the World Police & Fire Games to Rotterdam, and to introduce the competitors and their family and friends to the beautiful city. In all the years that I have been involved in the WPFG, I have always been received with great hospitality in the cities that were organizing the WPFG at that time. It makes you realize that Rotterdam is also a city that has everything to offer, and in my dream I can already see the event taking place.‘My’ Rotterdam
But how do you organize such an event? You can’t do that on your own; you need a lot of help. And that help has come in the form of an enthusiastic executive board, a committed management team and a hard-working organizing committee. Of course, it is not the case that everyone is working so hard to make my dream come true. That dream was where it all started, but by now there are many more interests involved in the organization of a mega event like this. However, I can assure you that when the Games in Rotterdam are officially opened in 2021 by the president of the world federation, I will think back to my dream for a moment and I may even get a little teary-eyed. I am incredibly proud that the World Police & Fire Games will take place in Rotterdam."Related posts
